How annual leave works under the NES
- It accrues progressively
- Leave builds up gradually as you work your ordinary hours, and any balance you do not use rolls over from year to year. Part-time employees accrue on the same basis, pro rata to their ordinary hours — there is no separate part-time formula.
- Shiftworkers get five weeks
- The extra week applies to an employee who meets the definition of a shiftworker in the Fair Work Act or their award or agreement, not to everyone who works shifts.
- Casual employees do not accrue annual leave
- Casuals are paid a loading instead, so these calculators do not apply to casual employment.
- Leave loading comes from your award
- Usually 17.5%, but it is not automatic: it applies only where an award, enterprise agreement or contract provides it. The annual leave pay calculator adds it only if you say it applies.
Not covered: long service leave (a separate state or territory entitlement), personal or carer's leave, public holidays, and tax or superannuation. Rules checked 15 September 2026. General information, not legal advice.
